If I could think of one thing in this world that can cripple a person’s ability to accomplish all that they have planned for themselves that would be fear. This character defect has stolen more dreams then anything in this world. The saddest part is for the most part this is self inflicted. People aren’t born with having a fearsome mentality, this is something that is learned and developed overtime. It’s deep rooted with our past experiences, how we might have been treated by others and our success rate at trying new things. The great thing is with self awareness this stronghold can be broken. In today’s blog I will be exploring how to tackle fear head by using the right tools to overcome them.

What you first have to understand about most fears is that they aren’t real for the most part. It is a state of mind that one comes into that seems to take control of them mentally and even physically sometimes. It’s an emotion that can grow bigger and bigger if it’s stopped causing one stress. There’s an old adage that says F.E.A.R. stands for false evidence appearing real. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The first step to overcoming any fear is by first recognizing it. What you have to know is that you can overcome any fear with the right tools. Fear isn’t always a bad thing; it can also serve as a good tool for warning signals when there actually a life-threatening situation that you need to get out of. If we didn’t react to these dangerous situations we could potentially put ourselves at great risk. One of the greatest fears that most people have besides dying is the fear of public speaking. The thought of someone speaking in front of a large group of people can literally cripple someone. Now there is nothing wrong with this if you don’t plan on or have to speak in front of an audience but when you’re placed in a situation that the fear might stop you from growing your career or getting in the way of your personal growth then this becomes a problem.

You can’t beat something if you don’t know what it is you’re facing. Whether this is real or imagined you need to know it is a problem. Denying it won’t make it go away. Secondly you need to ask yourself where this fear stemmed from and what might have caused it. Once you have figured that out ask yourself if this is something that can be overcome. What you will find is that most of the time if you are motivated enough to become a strong person you can overcome it. When you actually take a step back and start to analyze a certain fear, through the process you might discover it isn’t as bad as you might have imagined. Shedding light on the matter will help quite a bit.

The greatest advice I was given once by one of my mentors was the best way to beat an imagined fear was to face it head on. Once you internalize the fear, see it as something that won’t kill you, you are then ready to overcome it. This is a step towards personal growth and becoming strong in your fears that life throws at you. We are creatures of habit and to overcome something is to do it over and over again until it feels natural to you. Like most people I used to have a fear of public speaking. I remember being 23 year old financial planner and being asked one night to give my first presentation in front of people. I was a nervous wreck. After being asked to present over and over again in different environments I eventually got comfortable with it. It’s not like I don’t get nervous anymore, I still do but I know now that it is all in my head and that is something that helps me get through the moment when I start to feel nervous.

Like any challenge or obstacle in life it takes recognizing it to overcome it. By facing your imagined fears head you take the first step towards changing it. Do that long enough it becomes second nature to us and we are on our way to personal growth.
